Websites for Hackney businesses

Mare Street runs through the middle of it, Broadway Market pulls 150 stalls onto the street on a Saturday, and the borough holds 1,300 listed buildings.

Hackney's centre of gravity is Mare Street — the old coaching road out from the City to the eastern suburbs, and still where the Town Hall sits. North of it, Stoke Newington Church Street climbs the hill; south of it, Broadway Market runs down to the Regent's Canal at London Fields. The borough is bigger than people think: it stretches from Hoxton and Haggerston in the south, up through Dalston, Shacklewell and Hackney Central, all the way to Stamford Hill and Clapton in the north, with Hackney Wick on the Lea at the edge of the Olympic Park.

Working with Hackney

Hackney's small-business scene is built on markets, creative studios and trades. Broadway Market in London Fields — trading since 1883, relaunched as a Saturday food market in 2004, voted Best Food Market by the National Association of British Market Authorities in 2024 — pulls 150 stalls onto the street each weekend. Ridley Road Market down in Dalston has been running off Kingsland High Street since the 1880s, with the outdoor pitches run by the council. Hackney Empire on Mare Street has been a music hall and theatre since 1901 — Frank Matcham designed it, it's Grade II* listed, and it remains an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation. Creative agencies and small studios fill the railway arches off Kingsland, while the light industrial estates around Hackney Wick and the River Lea employ over 3,000 people.

Every Hackney site is hand-coded, mobile-first, and shipped on its own domain. There's nothing for you to maintain — hosting, SSL, backups, updates and small content edits are all in the £25/month plan. You'll deal directly with me from brief to launch, by email or WhatsApp, in plain English.

Real Hackney small businesses, not stock photos

Every Hackney brief lands somewhere on the same map of shops, salons, trades and indie operators. Here are some of the real Hackney businesses I've researched while writing this page — the kind of place a clean £25/month site is built for.

  • Markets and street food

Broadway Market and Ridley Road Market have been Hackney's two big trading streets since the 1880s; the council directly operates six street markets including Broadway, Ridley Road, Chatsworth Road, Hoxton Street, Kingsland and Well Street.

  • Creative industries and small studios

The railway arches and warehouse spaces off Kingsland Road and into Hoxton have long clustered small design, photography and creative agencies; the borough's light industrial estates around the River Lea employ over 3,000 people.

On 27 March 2026 the BBC reported that traders at the indoor Ridley Road Shopping Village in Dalston were in limbo as the market closed at the end of the month following Metropolitan Police concerns about crime and anti-social behaviour (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cn4v7vvxknmo).

FAQs

Hackney web design — common questions

Do you work across the whole London Borough of Hackney or just the centre?

+

Yes — anywhere in E1, E2, E5, E8 or E9. Most of the Hackney jobs I do are on or near Mare Street, Broadway Market, Ridley Road, Stoke Newington Church Street or Kingsland High Street, but the £25/month plan and the 1-2 week turnaround don't change by postcode. I've built sites for cafés, creative agencies and tradesmen from Dalston to Clapton.

Will you set up our Google Business Profile or run our SEO for us?

+

No — and that's deliberate. The £25/month plan is just the website itself: a hand-coded site on your own domain, hosting, SSL, backups, software updates, and same-day small content edits. I don't do Google Business Profile work, ranking packages, blogs, paid ads or social media management. The basics of on-page SEO (titles, descriptions, fast loads) are in. Anything beyond that, I'll happily point you at someone who does it properly.

I run a creative agency in Dalston or under the arches in Hoxton — is this the right kind of site for me?

+

It's exactly the kind of work I do. A short, fast, hand-coded site with your portfolio, services, contact details and a link you can put on Instagram or your email signature. I write the copy, you tell me what to change, and it goes live on a domain registered in your name — usually within 1-2 weeks of the agreed brief.

Can you take card payments or build an online shop for my Hackney shop or market stall?

+

Basic product showcase pages, yes — photos, descriptions, prices, an enquiry form. Full e-commerce checkout with card processing, no — I don't build those. If you need a proper shop, I can point you at someone who does that work.

Do you do SEO, blogs, or Google Business Profile?

+

No — and that's deliberate. The £25/month plan is for a clean, quick website on its own domain, with the basic on-page SEO sorted (sensible page titles, descriptions, fast loads). It is not a marketing package. If you want someone to actively manage your Google Business Profile, run a blog, or chase rankings, this isn't the right service — I'd rather say so upfront.
